Living Roof planned for Toronto-Dominion Centre
TD Bank Group and Toronto-Dominion Centre partner on green initiative
Toronto, September 8, 2011 - TD Bank Group (TD) (TSX:TD)(NYSE:TD),Cadillac Fairview and Toronto-Dominion Centre (TDC) are proud to announce plans for the development of a Living Roof. It will be located on the roof of the iconic TD pavilion, located at the corner of King and Bay Streets in the heart of Toronto's financial district.
The Living Roof, atop one of Toronto's most identifiable buildings, will be a bold expression of Cadillac Fairview's and TD's continued leadership and organizational-wide commitment to a dynamic and comprehensive environmental plan that is both alive and measurable. The design for the roof has received input and support from Heritage Toronto.
The idea for a Living Roof was inspired by TDC Green Council, the advisory group for occupant engagement and sustainability at Toronto-Dominion Centre.
"The Green Council is made up of tenant representatives who act as the advisory group for developing and driving TDC's engagement program, acting as the catalyst for sustainability," said David Hoffman, General Manager of the Toronto-Dominion Centre. "Since its establishment in February 2010, the Green Council has made it clear, through their commitment to action, that sustainability is a core value of TD Centre tenants. The Living Roof represents those values and is a bold expression of working together for environmental stewardship."
Construction is expected to begin within the next few weeks and planting will commence in the spring of 2012. The Living Roof will cover most of the 22,000 sq. ft. roof and will be made up of Creek Sedge Grass, a plant species adaptable to the shady conditions of the site and hardy enough to thrive in the Toronto climate.
A Living Roof is much more than an environmental statement. It's a living and active contributor to a healthier city. These are some of the benefits to the community:
- Helps to reduce the urban heat-island effect caused by building materials that retain heat
- Provides insulation from solar heat gain, reducing energy needs associated with cooling
- Retains rainwater, reducing storm water run-off
- Provides vegetated areas in urban landscapes that contribute to improving air quality
- Enhances the biodiversity of the area
Cadillac Fairview has long been committed to environmental stewardship at Toronto-Dominion Centre, and to date, 77 King Street West and TD Waterhouse Tower (79 Wellington Street West) have achieved LEED Gold EB: O & M certification with all Toronto-Dominion Centre towers on schedule to receive LEED certification by 2013. Achieving LEED Gold is a testament to Toronto-Dominion Centre's commitment to preserving the timeless design of architect Mies van der Rohe while offering uncompromising service, comfort and energy efficiency to the tenants of the TD Centre.
